I came to Tahiti by sea, under sail, after several ocean crossings. The camera was on board from the very first passages. You never look at a shoreline the same way once you have reached it slowly — that way of seeing has never left me.

I have been photographing for more than thirty years — first alongside my teaching, now full time. For twenty-five years I taught history and geography in French Polynesia, including nine years in the Marquesas, on the island of Hiva Oa. Geography taught me to read territories; teaching, to tell their stories. Photography carries both gestures forward.

I do not photograph landscapes: I photograph ways of inhabiting the world — the bonds between a place, the people who live there, and the ocean that connects them. In Polynesia first, where I live and work, and everywhere the sea has taken me.

My work unfolds in long-term series — Oceanic Roots, Pacific Energy, Territories of Light — exhibited and available as numbered fine art prints.
